Hollwich Kushner, New York: Curious, Innovative, Fun.
The Culture of Practice
“I thrive to create a firm where everybody feels even more invested than today, where we all push towards a common goal: making the world a better place,” explains Matthias Hollwich, Principal at Hollwich Kushner.
Hollwich Kushner is a leading architecture firm based in Lower Manhattan and winners of the prestigious MoMA /PS1 Young Architects Program. Recently they have gone on to design projects of varying typologies for clients including Vornado, WeWork, Uniqlo, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Hollwich Kushner is a new kind of architecture firm with a passion for creating a positive work environment like no other in the architectural world: a place people love to work at, yet are able to produce their best work.
Having co-founded Architizer, they are able to benchmark their firm against other tech start-ups and were named in Fast Company’s 2017 annual ranking of the world’s most innovative companies.
They believe that at a creative firm, the environment needs to be neutral so that the creative juices can run more freely. Neutral should not be mistaken with generic: every bit of their office has intention.
Based in the heart of downtown with an incredible view, they wanted to create quite a different culture. A place with fun, passion, and professionality – and not fear. “When your business is creativity, sociability is a part of the process. In our case, sociability wins,” says Kushner.
To that end, the office has team lunches weekly, happy hours monthly, and large summer and winter parties. They also have some summer Fridays, joint game leagues, and much more.
The flat organisation and transparency is reflected by the open layout without any private offices, with glass meeting rooms in the middle of it all. At Hollwich Kushner you will be part of a team that changes the world, and have fun doing so.
