B.E. Architecture, Melbourne: Collaborative, Action-packed, Dynamic.

Located in the back streets of Prahran and South Yarra, south of Melbourne’s Central Business District, B.E Architecture’s office has an industrial feel with staff working in a central open-plan space. The studio gives them space to be hands-on in exploring new techniques, applications and materials. 

“It’s not unusual to have the latest full-scale façade mock-up craned in or a custom light fitting assembled out the back of the office,” says Director Jonathon Boucher. “It’s not just about the way a building looks, but also how it works, how it is experienced, how it feels, and what impression it leaves,” he adds. 

The practice, which says it has a ‘very specific approach’ to its residential-focused work, is motivated by making buildings with a lasting character. It does this through a site-specific approach to materials and traditional craftsmanship. Its three directors are heavily involved in the work and the quick turnaround of projects means all staff can see a project through from the early design stages to completion. 

The 12-strong practice often makes trips across Australia to see the work of other architects. “We have done Hobart, Sydney and Canberra in the past which we find gives us a different perspective,” comments Boucher. “Besides checking out some great buildings, we share an interest in great art and food so of course we check out local galleries and restaurants. We do at least one big meal together each year which is always somewhere well designed and delicious.” 

Having this year celebrated its 20th anniversary, B.E Architecture is growing in size and predicts it will soon outgrow its current space. In the next office it plans to continue this interest in good food with a large kitchen so it can regularly entertain clients and staff.
