Powerful: Women in Architecture’s 7th Conference on Equity

Bespoke Careers sponsored and attended the seventh annual Powerful conference held all-online this year.

Over two Fridays, October 9th and October 16th, Bespoke Careers Los Angeles Consultant Natalie Dalton participated in the 7th annual Powerful Conference, organized by the Women in Architecture (WiA) Committee of the LA Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA). 

The theme this year was ‘unapologetically resilient,’ and featured leading architects, designers, politicians, and community organizers from across Greater Los Angeles, the state of California, and The United States.

Interestingly enough, the 5th Annual Powerful Conference was where Natalie first met Bespoke Careers CEO and Founder Lindsay Urquhart, who led one of the lunchtime break-out sessions that year. At the time, Natalie was working as the Events Manager for the AIA|LA – running Powerpoint presentations and organizing speakers behind-the-scenes. So, two years later, to participate as a guest was a welcomed change that allowed greater connection and interaction with fellow attendees.

Each and every one of the speakers gave fantastic insight into the world of architectural practice and equity, diversity, and inclusion in the field. Though the online event attracted around 500 attendees each day, there was a fantastic sense of intimacy – as if we were all listening in on conversations between friends and confidants. The epitome of that feeling was during the chat on ‘Persistence’ with Annie Chu, FAIA and Billie Tsien, AIA; both founding partners of their own firms. While presenters forged forward with their candid conversations, the Zoom chat window went wild with attendees voicing their support, admiration, and questions. 

From thought-provoking conversations on how leaders can continue to advocate for others, and incorporate greater diversity (in all senses) into their practice, to honest critiques of the field and how the year 2020 has changed the way we work – the connection was palpable. There were conversations that were uncomfortable, challenging, and shed a light on the complicated reality we are navigating; both in the A/E/C industries as well as our personal lives. 

Unapologetically resilient, and unequivocally inspiring, to say the least.
