"Communication is Key" - Tim Magill, 5+ Design
What Employers Want - MIPIM 2017 CANNES
Filmed by Bespoke Careers as part of our 'What Employers Want' series at MIPIM 2017 in Cannes, Tim Magill from 5+ Design tells us the best things about his practice and the office culture, what they look for in a CV, how they like to receive portfolios, what questions applicants should ask and his advice for those just starting out in their architecture careers.
What are the best things about your practice?
It’s interesting work – it’s global, worldwide and sustainable.
How would you describe your office culture?
We have a very open and accessible office. People can communicate all of their ideas. We’re very interested in people with ideas, who have their own voice, and want to do great design.
What are you looking for in a CV?
If they have great design work, that’s really important. They need to be a good communicator and have some interesting pursuits on their own as well. Those things really make them stand out.
How do you prefer to receive portfolios?
We do both, we’re not biased one way or the other. I always think digital is easier because you can project it on a screen, it’s bigger and makes it more immersive. I would recommend that over a hard copy.
What questions would you advise people to ask?
They probably should ask what their role would be, the kind of participation they would have in design, what are the potentials for travel, that sort of thing.
What advice would you give to anyone starting out in architecture?
Communication is really key, a great sense of aesthetics and travel is really important. You should also try and have interests outside of architecture that inspire you.
