Sheppard Robson, London: Welcoming, Respectful, Trusting.

Staff retention is the bedrock of Sheppard Robson’s culture and even when people do leave they have a habit of coming back. Of the 360 people who work in the practice’s London, Manchester and Glasgow offices, around 18 per cent have returned to Sheppard Robson after trying another practice. Partner Andrew German calls them ‘boomerangers.’ 

“We think it is because of the family atmosphere here,” adds Communications Director Peter Dye. “People stay here significantly longer than the industry average,” he continues. 

Staff stay because the practice allows them space to grow and progress. With an average age of just 35, the firm’s staff speak 36 languages. It’s a diverse mix that they believe brings a different approach to their projects across numerous typologies, including offices, residential, education, science and interiors. Events such as the practice’s annual Green Week, which promotes sustainability, is also a way fostering a spirit of learning. 

“Opportunities aren’t limited by the name above the door. The whole practice’s DNA is predicated on this. In the last two years we have had 35 promotions to associate, associate partner or partner, illustrating a clear route for progression,” adds German. 

In the coming months, the practice will complete a new extension to its London office – a converted piano factory in Camden – with the hope of bringing all London staff back under one roof. Extra space for the staff will add more meeting rooms and social areas. 

The building, which has been Sheppard Robson’s home since 1974, sits at the heart of the practice’s culture. “Having everyone under one roof is important, as is recognising the way the building speaks of the practice’s history and ethos,” says German.
