Jackson Clements Burrows, Melbourne: Playful, Pragmatic, Thoughtful.

The practice has been based in its warehouse-like studio space in Melbourne’s Harwood Lane since it launched in 1998, slowly expanding to fit its growing number of staff which has now reached 60. “Our culture reflects the idea that architecture should be a joyful response to its context and that architecture, too, should be rigorous, considered, and also fun,” says practice Directors Graham Burrows and Jon Clements.

“Jackson Clements Burrows takes great pride in being an energetic, nimble and dynamic practice,” they add. “In the same way that we watch changing trends and approaches in design, we also like to watch, adapt and implement new and innovative ways to run the practice. This ongoing desire for reassessment, refinement and improvement makes the practice a fast-paced, constantly evolving but exciting place to work.” 

They care about the development of their staff and are committed to ensuring a healthy work/life balance. There is also a mentorship programme for employees, regardless of what level they are at.

Staff are encouraged to teach, participate in design crits and are actively involved at the activities at Melbourne’s design schools. There is also a focus on cultural activities, with an office membership to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art giving staff access to various openings, exhibitions and talks. 

There is also a strong social agenda at Jackson Burrows Clements. Each week the office gathers together for a morning tea – a chance to catch up on projects and a forum for announcements and presentations. While once a month they hold a ‘beers and ideas’ session which includes design competitions, workshops and activities. And an annual day of festivities held on the Clements’ rural farm gives everyone a chance to kick-back and celebrate the achievements of the year.
