Rafael Viñoly Architects, New York: Energetic, Diverse, Inspirational.
The Culture of Practice
Established in 1983 by Rafael Viñoly and based in New York City, the internationally renowned architectural firm with projects spanning six continents always seeks to be ahead. Over the past 34 years, the practice’s key trademark is its core ability to reinvent institutional typologies and integrate the public realm into civic buildings.
After the win of the Tokyo International Forum in 1989, the firm moved into the current space in the early 90’s, which had previously been a meatpacking factory. A round-the-clock work ethic soon became an indelible part of the Viñoly DNA. “We are definitely seen as a hive of activity that is on a separate cycle,” explains Partner Andrea Lamerti. “The model shop is visible from the street and people might be here late into the night or on weekends.”
A hands-on approach defines the practice. The office centres around one big maker space including 3D printing, woodshop and spray-gluing areas. Senior people share the exact same space as people who started last week. That speaks to the idea that when you’re working on a project, it’s all about a common pursuit. There is no hierarchy of work or projects and everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute to the forward development of the firm.
Located a few blocks from Hudson River Park, the firm is embedded into the fabric of the neighbourhood in tangible ways. Together with Turner Construction and the Hudson River Park Trust, they’re transforming one of the piers on the Hudson River to create a building that can be used by a Manhattan-based university and the community. Additionally, they host panel discussions, gatherings, concerts and donor receptions for clients and profession friends that make the building an integrated part of the city and not just a stiff office environment.
At the firm’s core is an effort to forge your own way and drive your own learning and development, while participating in a diverse range of projects with an intense, focused and high-energy group of committed people.
