Retaining Talent in Architecture

Joel Peterson of KPF Shares His Insight with Bespoke and Guests

In the first of a series of information presentations dedicated to those supporting the architecture and design industry, Bespoke Careers in New York invited Joel Peterson, Associate Director of Human Resources at KPF to join us in our offices and share his in-depth knowledge and insight on how to retain talent within architecture.

Due to the fickle nature and small network of professionals within the architecture and design industry, it can be difficult to navigate a whole network of employees – let alone a company. Changes are always being made, feedback is always shaping next steps to take, and design firms are never stagnant. The process of acquiring, managing and developing the appropriate talent is a challenge for any firm and although there isn’t a clear-cut formulaic solution, there are strategies and tips to help address the topic. These can include:

  • Orientation and onboarding
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Development
  • The HR mission

By flipping the narrative and focusing on the people within the business rather than the business itself, talent can and will grow. Peterson’s key closing point states, “Don’t build your business, build your people. Your  people will build your business”.
