Filmed by Bespoke Careers at MIPIM 2017 in Cannes, Ian Ritchie from Ian Ritchie Architects gives us some insight into working at his practice, advice for applicants applying to work there, what questions to ask at interview, how to make a good first impression and advice for those just starting their architecture career.

What are the best things about your practice?

Being inspired, prepared, encouraged to push boundaries and working in an environment of shared values and greater ambition. 

What is the office culture like in three words?

Challenging, stimulating and supportive.

What advice would you give to people applying to your practice?

Breadths and depths and evidence of originality. It’s nice to see people with passions and skills beyond architecture whether that’s music, literature, theatre or performing. 

What makes a good first impression?

Enthusiasm, openness, intellectual curiosity, clarity of thought and expression.

How do you prefer to receive portfolios?

In an interview, the digital is everywhere so you’re always looking at what moves and those sorts of things, but I’ve always liked the touch of a portfolio which is a sensuality of the materials and it showcases the evidence that someone has made something at full scale, 1:1 scale.

What questions should you ask in an interview?

I expect a candidate to ask to see around the office, research centre and workshop as it’s fundamental to them. If they don’t want to be shown around, then it’s a failure as it shows they lack interest. It’s good to avoid asking what specific projects they’ll be working on. 

What advice would you give to anyone starting out in architecture?

My best advice would be to head to a second or third world country and learn about architecture over there.
